CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
“There is a difference, you know.” Lani lay against Christopher’s shoulder, the warm blue blanket wrapped around her body as they sat on the floor at the end of the bed.
“What’s that?” The question was unnecessary; he knew what she was going to say. There were so many differences, too many to name. But one that made their circumstance altogether different. One that required he return home, while her future lay up in the air.
She hesitated. “You have a beautiful son.”
He didn’t respond. She looked up at him, waiting. He could feel her body become tense, saw the worry in her eyes. He didn’t mind her mentioning his baby boy. He just wondered if it pained her, to have lost her baby. Of course Terrence had given both he and Kenya an earful about her decision to abort without him. How selfish and inconsiderate her decision had been, how she seemed intent on ruining his life. Christopher remembered that at the time that he had wanted to punch Terrence in the gut and throw him out of his house. He had lost respect for him that day, for making his wife out to take all the blame and not forgiving her and her mistake, the way that a husband should. If anything, he and Kenya had later agreed that Lani had her hands full trying to take care of Terrence’s spoiled ass, although neither of them believed in abortion.
“Yep, my baby boy.” He changes everything. Christopher knew that he could get lost in Lani; make her his and never look back. A part of him felt in tune with the younger him that had lost Alayna so many years ago. Some small part of him felt awakened from a deep hibernation, thawing out the deep infatuated love that had been buried within him. If he were childless, he would take whatever time he had left and splurge, overindulge, allow himself to get lost in Lani. Kenya and Terrence, with their selfish friendship and their hidden agenda, would be easy to walk away from.
But little Christopher existed and he mattered more than Christopher’s own life. Raising him would not allow Christopher the luxury of being lost in love’s daze. “Changes things.” Christopher repeated.
Lani pressed. “Like...”
“Like me wanting to keep you for myself. Wrap you into my life. I can’t. Not right now.”
She nodded. “Not right now,” she repeated softly.
Christopher’s phone buzzed angrily on the dresser in front of them. Lani reached over and grabbed it. He didn’t seem to care whether she looked at it or not. He just looked at her. She smiled and handed it to him, without looking at the screen. There was no doubt who it was, anyway. Lani kissed him on his cheek and moved slowly toward the bathroom with the blanket wrapped around her.
This is the real difference between me and you. I still gotta have access to the world and leave my phone on. Christopher thought.
Lani had turned her phone completely off, denying any and every one entry into their comfort zone.
